Boat trailer brakes off, pedestrian killed in Holland Township

HOLLAND TWP. — One person is dead and another is seriously injured after a pontoon boat and trailer became separated from the vehicle pulling it and struck pedestrians in Holland Township on Sunday.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of ​​Quincy Street and 140th Avenue on Sunday, July 21 at approximately 2:00 p.m. Investigation revealed that a 44-year-old Holland man was driving a truck westbound on Quincy, towing a pontoon boat on a trailer behind his vehicle.

The trailer broke away from the truck, hit the road and struck two pedestrians who were walking on a nearby bike path. Both individuals were trapped under the boat and trailer and had to be freed with the assistance of Holland Fire/Rescue and other emergency personnel.

One pedestrian, a 62-year-old resident of Holland, was fatally injured in the incident. The other, a 38-year-old resident of Holland, was taken to hospital by Aero Med with serious injuries.

Names of the pedestrians have not been released by OCSO. The driver of the truck was unharmed.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
