Aileen Cannon to oversee case against alleged Trump hitman Ryan Routh

The case against Ryan Routh is (as I predicted) getting more serious as federal prosecutors in South Florida charge him with the attempted murder of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

And guess which federal district judge was randomly assigned to hear the case? Aileen Cannon.

That’s right, it’s the Trump appointee whose dismissal of Trump’s classified documents case is currently being appealed by special counsel Jack Smith, as outside parties push for the 11th U.S. Court of Appeals to not only overturn Cannon’s dismissal but also appoint a new judge who does not share her apparent bias in favor of the former president.

What does Cannon’s pro-Trump history mean for Routh (who is presumed innocent until proven guilty through trial or plea)?

Possibly nothing. But you wonder if he could try to get Cannon kicked out of his school. case because of her clear preference for the man he allegedly wanted to kill.

Given the 11th Circuit appeals court case over the confidential documents, Routh would not be the first to formally raise Cannon’s possible bias.

Of course, the judge herself could decide to step aside. One reason she wouldn’t do so in Routh’s case would be to avoid the negative implications it could have for her handling of Trump’s case. She clearly didn’t step aside then, and she will get that case back if Smith reverses her dismissal without a new judge being assigned (assuming Trump doesn’t win the election and completely squash the federal case).
