NEW YORK – The Orioles can clinch the home Wild Card with a win tonight or a Tigers loss this afternoon. The Rays lead 3-2 in the seventh.

Update: The Tigers rallied from 4-3.

James McCann is catching tonight and Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter. Jordan Westburg stays at second base and bats second, and Ramón Urías is the third baseman. He bats seventh.

Colton Cowser remains at the mop-up spot. Ryan O’Hearn is the first baseman.

Corbin Burnes makes his final start before an expected Game 1 assignment in the playoffs. His last two starts came against the Tigers and he threw a total of 14 scoreless innings with five hits and 15 strikeouts. He faced the Yankees on May 1 at Camden Yards and allowed two runs in six innings – Oswaldo Cabrera’s two-run homer.

Burnes’ only career start at Yankee Stadium came on September 10, 2023. He pitched eight hitless innings. The Brewers didn’t allow a hit until 11e and the Yankees won 4-3 in the 13e.

The opponent’s starter was Gerrit Cole, who is on the mound tonight.

Cole has made 16 starts and posted a 3.67 ERA and 1.177 WHIP in 88 1/3 innings. His 2024 debut came against the Orioles on June 19 in the Bronx and he allowed two runs in four innings. They met again on July 12 at Camden Yards and he surrendered one run in six innings.

In Cole’s fourteenth career win against the Orioles, he went 6-3 with a 2.57 ERA and 0.947 WHIP.

Cedric Mullins is 10-for-29 with a double and home run against Cole. Ramón Urías is 7-for-16 with two doubles, a triple and a homerun. James McCann is 5-for-13 with three doubles and a homer.

Anthony Santander is 4-for-27, Ryan Mountcastle is 5-for-26, O’Hearn is 2-for-17 and Rutschman is 3-for-16.

Cole’s ERA is 3.05 in 11 starts since the hiatus.

The Orioles and Yankees have identical ERAs of 3.82 from their starters.
