Giants QB depth chart: Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito battle to be Daniel Jones’ best backup

Vaseline 2 months ago

After a torn ACL shortchanged his 2023 season, Daniel Jones is back at full strength as the Giants starting QB.

Although Jones has had his fair share of ups and downs during his career, he was able to lead the franchise to the playoffs during his last full season. The 27-year-old returns to action with a new first-round target in WR Malik Nabers, who has already posted several highlight reels.

Jones has seemingly shaken off the rust in his return to action, but New York is still taking a cautious approach with its franchise QB. Should Jones need a reprieve, the Giants have taken steps to ensure their QB room has adequate support.

Here’s a look at New York’s 2024 QB depth chart.

Daniel Jones

Jones, the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, is in his sixth season as New York’s starting QB. Jones took over from Eli Manning and took over for the two-time Super Bowl champions in Week 3 of the 2019 season.

After leading New York to the NFC Divisional Round in 2022, Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract to keep him with the franchise through at least the 2026 season. Injuries marred Jones’ 2023 season and a torn ACL marked the end of his season.

After playing just six games last year, Jones is back under center and looking to lead New York back to the postseason. He has thrown for 600 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions through the first three weeks of the 2024 season.

Lock signed with the Giants as a free agent in March, joining the franchise after two seasons in Seattle. He is listed as the backup on New York’s depth chart.

Like Jones, Lock is a member of the 2019 draft class. After going 42nd overall in 2019, Lock went 4-1 in five starts as a rookie – his best season as a Bronco. Lock was sent to the Seahawks as part of the Russell Wilson trade, but lost the QB competition to Geno Smith.

After just two starts in Seattle, Lock will now be tasked with being Jones’ primary backup.

Tommy DeVito

A New Jersey native, DeVito was a phenom during the 2023 season.

Jones’ injuries thrust DeVito into the spotlight, where he posted a 3-3 record as a starter, captivating New York fans. As an undrafted rookie in 2023, DeVito completed 114 passes for 1,101 yards, including eight touchdowns and just three picks.

It’s possible he can overtake Lock at some point this year, but for now, “Tommy Cutlets” is just the stopgap QB.
