Deep takes two as India dents Bangladesh in the second Test

India fast bowler Akash Deep dismissed both Bangladesh’s openers within the first hour of play as the tourists lunched at 74-2 in the second Test on Friday.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, on 28, and Mominul Haque, on 17, batted at the break in Kanpur after amassing 45 points between them.

Bangladesh’s openers started cautiously after a wet outfield delayed the match in what could be former captain Shakib Al Hasan’s last appearance in this format.

Zakir Hasan stayed around for 24 deliveries before Deep broke through and had the southpaw caught in the gully of a diving Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck.

Deep struck again to trap Shadman Islam lbw for 24 after the umpire dismissed the call, but India reversed the decision in their favor.

Najmul and fellow southpaw Mominul held the break with a drizzle on the ground, bringing out the covers around lunchtime.

The hosts come in unchanged with three players.

Ex-Bangladesh captain Shakib, 37, announced his international retirement on Thursday and could play his last Test match if he cannot return home for a scheduled South African series.

Shakib is a former lawmaker for ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party and has stayed away from Bangladesh because of the threat of criminal charges against him and dozens of her former allies.

India are heavily favored to win the two-match series after winning the opener in Chennai by 280 runs.
