TALHAASSEE, Fla. – Florida residents in Hurricane Helene’s direct path are preparing for the impact.

Right on the water, about an hour south of Tallahassee, Michael Humphreys and his neighbors are hoping it won’t be as bad as Hurricane Michael.

“It was just a mess, everything under the house went into the road,” he said.

West of there, in Apalachicola, some people were still leaving town Thursday as waters began to rise.

From there through the state capital and along the Big Bend, most businesses closed early.

6 p.m. report:

Many homes were boarded up and some residents even used tape to secure their property.

Crews erected orange barriers to protect power plants from the storm surge.

In Tallahassee, resident Wynn said his concern is all the trees.

“It will knock down the power lines and we will be without power,” he said. “The last time in May, when we had tornadoes, I was without power for days.”

On the island of Cedar Key, everyone Christian De La Rosa of Local 10 spoke to said they were evacuating, but resident Anne Osteen said she was concerned.

“I might have a neighbor about two houses down where they might be staying,” she said. “What do we say: prepare for the worst, pray for the best.”
