Postponed Mets-Braves Games create chaos in NL Playoff

Vaseline 1 month ago

The picture of the National League play-offs just got a lot murkier.

Due to Hurricane Helene’s approach to the Gulf Coast, Major League Baseball has postponed two games between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. Originally scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, the games will now be made up with a doubleheader on Monday – one day before the MLB playoffs begin on Tuesday.

The Braves and Mets are currently battling the Arizona Diamondbacks for the NL’s final two wild card spots. New York (87-70) is in the second wild-card spot on Wednesday night and is half a game ahead of Arizona, which is half a game ahead of Atlanta.

There’s another twist to the story: If the Diamondbacks are eliminated this weekend and the Mets and Braves take the final two spots, it will be up to the commissioner whether or not the games scheduled for Monday are played. They would only be of interest for sowing purposes.

Essentially, this all comes down to what the three teams do against their next opponents.

The Braves will host the Kansas City Royals in three games starting Friday. The Royals themselves are in the middle of the American League wild card hunt.

The Mets travel to Milwaukee to play three games against the NL Central champion Brewers.

The Diamondbacks have one more game in their series against the Giants on Wednesday night, after which they will host three games against the San Diego Padres, who clinched a playoff spot on Tuesday night. The Padres still have a shot at the NL West title and are two games behind the Dodgers ahead of games against them Wednesday and Thursday.

None of the three teams chasing the final two spots in the NL playoffs have an easy task this weekend, as all three teams face something to play for.

Things will almost certainly get wild in the coming days, and the postponed games will likely make them even crazier.
