ANNA MARIA ISLAND, Fla. (WWSB) – ABC7’s Brigham Harris has learned that the damage to Anna Maria Island from Helene is so immense, it could be days or weeks before residents can return.

All access to the island is closed. A home on Holmes Beach caught fire, causing a woman and her dog to flee into the floodwaters for safety.

There are reports of extreme flooding in several neighborhoods.

Manatee County Sheriff Public Information Officer Randy Warren told ABC7 this was some of the worst damage he has seen in 30 years in law enforcement.

Holmes Beach Police shared photos on its Facebook page with a quote: “The beach came over Gulf Drive in many places. It will take some time before the island is safe and passable, so please be patient. First-in teams work hard to get you back home.

Crews work to rescue stranded people and battle fires and other emergencies. The bridges remain closed and it could be days or weeks before residents are allowed to return, according to Warren.
