The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is monitoring road conditions as widespread rain continues across Southwest Virginia on Thursday.

Officials said it is best to remain vigilant during these times of uncertainty.

“Our message is to just stay informed,” said VDOT’s Joey Barker. “Before you head out, you’ll want to check all weather conditions. You’ll want to make sure you’re aware of areas that are more prone to flooding so you can avoid those areas and seek higher ground if necessary. Be aware of your environment and look for all kinds of messages.”

According to VDOT, it only takes 12 inches of water to wash away a vehicle.

Flooding has already been reported in parts of Smyth County.

People can call VDOT’s Customer Service Center 24/7 by dialing 1-800-FOR-ROAD.
