CeeDee Lamb addresses behavior during Cowboys’ loss to Ravens, more

FRISCO, TX – The word of the week for the Dallas Cowboys is “frustration,” or maybe even “anger,” and for good reason. They are 1-2 this season and the two losses both came at AT&T Stadium, which is a three-game deficit when you factor in the loss in the playoffs and to the Green Bay Packers in January, so as players when CeeDee Lamb’s emotions get the best of him, well, that follows.

The All-Pro receiver took a lot of heat from outside the building after wearing his frustrations and anger on his sleeve in Week 3, and did not speak immediately after the game to give cooler heads time to gain the upper hand.

On Tuesday, just before leaving for the Big Apple, Lamb not only spoke, but his words were imbued with responsibility and self-awareness.

“I know this is not the player I am,” Lamb said, apologizing after suffering a stroke. “I know this is not the teammate that I am. … It was a bad game on my part. I take full responsibility for that.

‘It will be better for me in the future. And it will be fine.’

He then explained what prompted the actions, and it wasn’t necessarily that the offense itself was not okay, but mainly because he was angry with himself and disappointed that he wasn’t contributing in the way he knew he could ; and matters were made worse by a fumble in the red zone that added to the list of things that cost the Cowboys the game.

“I expect a lot of myself – more than anyone could expect of me,” he said. “And honestly, I failed myself, and obviously I failed the team, just in terms of producing and being that playmaker… I kind of let the game go to my head. To be honest, I have to be honest with myself and I played a part in that loss, a big part, honestly, and (neither) my body language nor my attitude (helped change) the outcome of the game.

It’s not quite comparable to what happened in 2023 when Lamb was criticized for being on the sidelines away from the team during the defeat, but the fuel was exactly the same: the demand for greatness and fear when it happens in the moment.

Lamb went on to have a record-setting season, one that also helped Dak Prescott earn an All-Pro title and second place in the NFL MVP race, and both emerged unscathed after Sunday’s encounter, with their personal relationship having a foundation . able to withstand earthquakes like the one against the Ravens.

For his part, Lamb says part of the equation is a non-story.

“We understand the urgency, and that’s between us,” he said of Prescott. ‘We talk about it every day, every night and our relationship has become stronger. Don’t let what’s out there fool you. We are brothers until the end and we know that we are all we have.

“I tip my hat to him. I have so much respect for him and I consider him a brother. That said, everything will come out – the energy, the passion, the love, the fight, and we will make up in the end.

Finally, does Lamb foresee a similar arc to his production as the post-49ers affair, when he went on a tear with 41 receptions for 617 yards, an 80.4% catch rate and four touchdowns from scrimmage in the four games that followed?

“I plan on doing it again,” Lamb said.

For an offense that is disjointed and struggles with slow starts and finishes, that’s music to the Cowboys’ ears, although it’s not just Lamb’s job to cook — it’s everyone’s.

Although it’s good to know where Lamb is directing his anger in the future:

Across the line of scrimmage.
