Record breaking heat! Newest 115s ever possible

Vaseline 7 days ago

PHOENIX – High pressure is causing temperatures to rise, bringing unprecedented heat to Arizona for this time of year.

A Warning for excessive heat is in effect for the Phoenix metro area and much of Arizona’s lower deserts until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

So we’re in ABC15 Weather Action Mode until then as a reminder to take action in these dangerously high temperatures. Stay hydrated, limit time outside in the afternoon, and never leave children or pets in the car, no matter how quick the errand is.

This heat wave is definitely breaking records as temperatures in the Valley will reach between 110 and 115 degrees over the next few days. Average highs, considered “normal” for this time of year, are in the mid-90s.

The last 110 degree day ever recorded in Phoenix was previously September 19, 2010, but we’ve been breaking that record day after day this week.

It is likely that we will continue to mark the last recorded 110 degree day through October 1st. Currently, the hottest temperature ever recorded in Phoenix for the month of October is 107 degrees.

There’s even a chance we could hit 115 degrees on Saturday. If we do that, the record for the last 115 degree day will be broken by 3 weeks! On average, Phoenix is only 115 degrees Celsius or warmer 2 days a year, but we’ve really upped the ante there in recent years as our climate continues to get hotter.

Last year we set a record of 22 days out of 115 days or warmer and so far this year we have had 11. That puts 2024 third for the highest number ever recorded, behind 2023 and 2020.

Fortunately, our nights are getting longer, so we’re not expecting 90-degree lows. Overnight temperatures will drop into the low to mid 80s across the Valley, but even that is exceptionally warm for this time of year and we could set new daily record heat records as well.

Temperatures will gradually drop next week, but triple digits are still in the forecast through the week of October 7.

Our drought has been exacerbated in recent months by the hotter and drier monsoon we have experienced. There are only a few more days to get rain in the buckets before the monsoon season officially ends on September 30th and our rain chances are nil across Arizona.

So far this monsoon season, Phoenix has picked up just 0.74 inches of rain. Our 30-year average (which is considered our normal amount of rainfall) is 2.43 inches. But it’s important to remember that this is a decrease from the previous 30-year average of 2.71 inches (from 1981-2010), as our Valley climate continues to become hotter and drier.
