Governor Winfield Dunn, the 43rd governor of Tennessee, died on Saturday.

He was 97 years old.

Acting Governor Bill Lee’s office shared the news at the request of Dunn’s family.

Governor Lee reflected on Dunn’s legacy in a statement:

“Governor Winfield Dunn was, simply put, a true statesman,” said Governor Bill Lee. “He was a true servant of the people of Tennessee. He led with principled integrity, strong faith and a gracious love for others. Our state is a better place because of his service and leadership. Maria and I join all Tennesseans in honoring Governor Dunn’s life, and we pray for Betty and the Dunn family in the days ahead.”

Dunn was born on July 1, 1927 in Meridian, Mississippi.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, according to a press release. He also served as a reserve lieutenant in the Air Force.

After graduating from the University of Mississippi in 1950, Dunn continued his training at the University of Tennessee Medical Units in Memphis.

He later practiced dentistry in Shelby County, according to the release.

In 1970, Dunn was elected governor of Tennessee. Before the election, he had never held public office.

During Dunn’s time as governor, he created a statewide preschool program, created public parks, prioritized highway construction and established the Department of Economic and Community Development.

Dunn also served as the chairman of both the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees and the Tennessee State Board of Regents.

According to Governor Lee’s office, Dunn’s funeral arrangements are pending.
