Saturday Night Live Season 50 Celebrates Charli XCX’s Brat Summer Trend with Bowen Yang as Host of the Talk Show ‘Brat or Nat’

Saturday Night Live Season 50 kicked off with a special nod to Brat mom Charli XCX in a hilarious skit dedicated to this summer’s biggest trend. Bowen Yang impersonated the Apple singer in a fictional talk show called The Talk Talk Show – inspired by one of her songs. The talk show sketch also featured Sarah Sherman, Jean Smart, Chloe Fineman and Ego Nwodim.

In the sketch, Yang brought in Sarah Sherman as Troye Sivan, who is on the road with Charli for their Sweat Tour. Sherman comically pulled up her shirt to show off fake abs and let out a chuckle. There was even a game where they ridiculed current events as ‘Brat or Nat’.

After making sure the audience understood the meaning of “brat,” Yang played a fun game called “Brat or Nat,” where he rated the latest events and listed them under the respective name. The game referenced all the pageant events and pop culture things and labeled them as brat or wet. Examples include: Hunter Biden’s laptop (snotty nose), or Mark Robinson’s search history (wet).

Barron Trump’s choice to enroll in NYU also drew the nickname “snot,” which contradicted the school itself being rated as “wet.” The sketch also featured Amy Adams’ character in Nightbitch as “brat” and New York Mayor Eric Adams, who is being sued, as “wet.”

Yang then welcomed SNL host Jean Smart who played “queer nightlife icon Susanne Bartsch” and Chloe Fineman who played “straight CNN icon Kaitlan Collins” in his fictional The Talk Talk Show on the theme of the upcoming election. Ego Nwodim, acting as Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, was able to dispense with civility and give her opinion on Matt Gaetz and JD Vance.

The sketch was inspired by Charli XCX’s latest album Brat, which took both the summer and the charts by storm. It was released on June 7 and is full of hyper-pop summer beats. Charli also made headlines when she tweeted “Kamala is brat,” showing off her political influences.

Her other notable moments include performances at Madison Square Garden with Troye Sivan, where Lorde and Addison Rae were her special guests, just before season 50 of Saturday Night Live premiered.
