‘SNL’: Bowen Yang plays Chappell Roan as Moo Deng the baby hippopotamus and gets Colin Jost hosed down

Chances are if you’ve scrolled through social media in recent weeks, you’ve come across Moo Deng, Thailand’s baby hippo that’s stealing hearts. But on Saturday night, Moo Deng stopped by “SNL” to set some boundaries for fans.

Naturally, it was Bowen Yang who played the baby hippo, as he had experience giving voice to creatures and things that can’t really talk. Wearing a proper hippo costume, Yang’s Moo Deng got blunt during a weekend update that reflected artist Chappell Roan’s recent statements on social media.

“For the last 10 weeks I’ve been running non-stop, eating lettuce, trying to bite the snake out of a water, the water out of a snake, and the response has been overwhelming,” she said. “But it’s gotten to the point where I have to set some boundaries.”

As Moo Deng’s speech progressed, she would occasionally call for the hose, causing a literal hose to squirt water for Yang to chew. By the end of the segment, host Colin Jost was soaked and mourning “my wig!”

‘Reminder: Women don’t owe you anything! If I trip over things in my enclosure and bite my trainer’s knee, I’m working. That’s the project,” the hippopotamus continued. “Don’t shout my name and expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial best friend, or because you appreciate my talent.”

Yes, this message may sound familiar to you. It was quite similar to recent statements from Chappell Roan, who posted a powerful statement on Instagram last month. Jost of course noticed this and pointed it out to Moo Deng, asking if she knows who the singer is.

‘I’m ten weeks old, Colin, of course. By the way, leave her alone!” Moo Deng replied. “Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health. We both deserve patience and mercy, so stop harassing her and stop throwing shellfish at her!”

Before Moo Deng left Weekend Update, she had to add another disclaimer.

“I also know that I am only ten weeks old, but this is very important to me, so please listen, I will not be making an endorsement in this year’s election, the presidential election,” she said.

This was, of course, another nod to Chappell Roan, who has been criticized in the past week for her view of this year’s election and how she will handle it.
