Although National Hurricane Center forecasters are monitoring five separate systems in the Atlantic Ocean, including newly formed Tropical Storm Kirk, only one is of real concern for the United States and the storm-ravaged Southeast.

The system likely to hit the United States was in the Caribbean Sea, the hurricane center said Monday. A “large area of low pressure” in the sea produces disorganized showers and thunderstorms, and environmental conditions appear conducive to the gradual development of the system.

The center said that “a tropical depression could form within a few days while the system is over the southern Gulf of Mexico or the northwestern Caribbean Sea.”

The system will develop more slowly than thought: “While interests in the northwestern Caribbean Sea and along the U.S. Gulf Coast should continue to monitor the progress of this system, the timetable for potential development has been later pushed back to late week or this weekend. ”, the center said in an advisory on Monday morning.

The center says the system has a 40% chance of forming over the next seven days.

AccuWeather forecasters said Monday that the greatest risk of significant and possibly excessive rainfall from the system may be across Florida, but this is subject to change as the system develops.

Tropical Depression Joyce and Tropical Storm Isaac continue to weaken

Tropical Depression Joyce was expected to continue weakening over the next 48 hours, the hurricane center said Monday, and it would likely become a post-tropical remnant later Monday and dissipate Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Isaac was located about 525 miles (835 kilometers) northwest of the Azores on Monday morning and is expected to turn northwest with a similar forward speed on Tuesday, the center said.

“Slow weakening is expected in the coming days,” the center said Monday morning. Isaac is forecast to become a post-tropical cyclone later Monday.

Kirk expected to become a “large and powerful” hurricane later this week

The latest storm being tracked by the hurricane center is Tropical Storm Kirk, which formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean on Monday morning.

The hurricane center said Monday morning that a “general westward to west-northwestward motion” is expected to continue through Tuesday, with a gradual turn to the northwest forecast by Wednesday.

The system has maximum sustained winds of nearly 70 km per hour with higher gusts, and “steady strengthening is forecast,” the center said. The storm will likely become a hurricane Tuesday night or Wednesday.

Current forecast models show the system curving northward toward the mid-Atlantic, far away from the U.S.
