The Megalopolis discourse is, appropriately, mega weird

MegapolisFrancis Ford Coppola’s modern epic starring Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Nathalie Emmanuel and more, released just a few days ago and already called a ‘box office bomb’‘ and sparked a lot of internet conversations about Hollywood, risqué films and more.

The visually impressive film from the acclaimed director behind films like The godfather And Dracula by Bram Stoker sparked discussion long before it debuted on September 27, thanks in large part to the director said last month that he ‘cancelled’ actors like Jon Voight (an outspoken Trump supporter and a jerk his own daughterAngelina Jolie) and Shia LaBeouf (charged with sexual assault in 2021, with a court date to be determined) to avoid Megapolis be labeled as a ‘woke Hollywood’ film. Now that the film is out, however, the discourse around it has changed, with people posting clips from the film to highlight its rather unorthodox tone and reports emerging of the film showing in largely empty theaters across the country.

Megapolis was always going to be a polarizing film – it’s clear that the epic is meant to defy genre classifications, push the boundaries of visual effects and ask some rather heady questions about the future of the United States, the limits of creativity, the ego of the artist, the perceived passage of time, Hollywood’s aversion to risk, and more. The movie has been mentioned “Too strange for words,”A “wild fever dream of excess and idealism,” A “catastrophe,” and a “passion project without passion.”

Recent reports say the hugely expensive venture, which cost around $140 million in marketing and production costs, partly funded by Coppola selling part of his wine estate, grossed just $4 million in its opening weekend. The New York Times says the film is “on track to finish sixth in the weekend’s box office derby, even behind Devara part 1A poorly ratedthree-hour action drama in Telugu” and that it is playing in “almost empty theatres”.

Despite its poor box office performance, the internet continues to talk about it Megapolis. People are amazed by a scene where Adam Driver says “go back to the club” in a strange accent and also says “yes” in increasingly Foghorn Leghorn ways.

Viewers are baffled by the dialogue and baffled by the architecture depicted in the film, and some are make visual comparisons with the Star Wars prequels.

Some are angry about A plot point in which a woman lies about her sexual assault while others raise the issue lawsuit filed against Coppola by a Megapolis extra.

The conversations surrounding the film are passionate, varied and intense. The Letterboxd reviews are everywhere. At the time of writing, it has a critic score of 49% Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 34%. People love this movie or hate it, admire Coppola or despise him, believe it’s a masterpiece or a complete flop – but one thing’s for sure: no one can stop talking about it Megapolis. Should I go see it?
