Find out why Giants decided to fire general manager Farhan Zaidi

The San Francisco Giants made a drastic change Monday by letting go of president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi. Zaidi is out, and former Giants superstar and future Hall of Famer Buster Posey is coming in to replace the seven-term president.

Giants chairman Greg Johnson released a statement on the decision to sign Posey.

“We are looking for someone who can define, direct and lead the baseball philosophy of this franchise, and we believe Buster is the perfect fit,” Johnson said. “Buster has the demeanor, intelligence and drive to do this job, and we are confident he and Bob Melvin will work together to bring winning baseball back to San Francisco.”

The writing was on the wall for the team earlier this month, when The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly detailed how Posey “personally dealt” with third baseman Matt Chapman to agree to a six-year, $151 million extension rounds.

Posey joined Giants ownership in 2022 after their board of directors became “so frustrated with the lack of immediate progress” between Zaidi and Chapman’s agent, Scott Boras.

Baggarly went on to say that Giants ownership Zaidi and Boras weren’t trying to finish on the edge.

Ultimately, the decision came down to results. Under Zaidi, the Giants reached the postseason only once in seven years. Zaidi has never been able to put a consistent team on the diamond year in and year out, which is not reflective of the winning culture the Giants have endured throughout their history.

Zaidi was hired in 2018 to overhaul the organization, but that was not the case. The team’s only postseason appearance came in 2021, when they won the National League West and recorded the most wins in their franchise with 107.

Those 107 wins are the most in franchise history, surpassing the 106 wins of the New York Giants from 1904. The Giants fell short in 2021, losing in the National League Division Series to their biggest rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, in five games in a thriller of a series.

The Giants haven’t sniffed the postseason since.

Posey is now tasked with leading the Giants as far as possible. All eyes will be on the future Hall of Famer, who helped lead the Giants to three World Series titles, was named a seven-time All-Star in his career, 2012 NL MVP, 2010 NL Rookie of the Year and a 2016 Gold Glove award winner .

It’s a new era in Giants baseball now. This winter will tell us a lot.
