Sony’s PlayStation Network outage: Why is the PSN network down?

Vaseline 2 weeks ago

PlayStation users are experiencing a widespread outage affecting Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN). Gamers are reporting system loading errors, impacting multiple consoles such as the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PS Vita, and even older devices like the PlayStation 3.

Downdetector, an outage tracking service, saw a spike in reports around 6am IST, confirming the problem.

The official PSN service status page states: “You may be experiencing issues launching games, apps, or network functions. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience.” The status page further confirms that several services, including account management, gaming, social features, and the PlayStation Store, are currently experiencing issues across all platforms.

The outage has disrupted access to both multiplayer and single-player games that require online connectivity. Users on consoles such as the PS5, PS4, PS Vita and PS3 reported being unable to launch games or apps due to errors such as ‘PS5 error code WS-116522-7’, which is related to a failed system software update. While offline games that don’t require a connection still worked, games that relied on online services were discontinued.

Why is PlayStation Network offline: Reason

Sony has not yet provided details on the cause of the outage or an estimated time for resolution. Interestingly, this network issue occurred just hours after Sony fixed a separate bug that affected the artwork on the PS5 home screen, although it’s unclear if the two incidents are related. Meanwhile, a Twitter user claimed that PSN servers may have been hacked.

Notably, in 2011, PSN was offline for 23 days after a significant security breach. During that incident, Sony compensated users with free game titles and 30 days of PlayStation Plus access.

Gamers are advised to keep an eye on updates from Sony as the company works to resolve the disruption. For now, the only official statement is: “We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
