LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Drake Hogestyn, who appeared in nearly 4,300 episodes of the long-running soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” has died at the age of 70.

Hogestyn’s family announced his death in a post on social media.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn,” the post said. “He was hit with the curve ball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he rose to the challenge with incredible strength and determination.

“After fighting an incredible battle, he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. He was the most wonderful husband, father, daddy and actor. …We love him and we will miss him all the days of our lives.

Hogestyn portrayed John Black on the show for almost 40 years, first appearing in 1986. Actors from the show paid tribute.

“When I heard the news of Drake Hogestyn’s passing, I felt kicked in the gut,” Eileen Davidson, who played Kristen DiMera on the show, said in a social media post. “Truly unique in its kind. So kind, hilarious and talented. I loved his family so much. I know he’s up there telling one of his many stories. Thanks for the laugh Drake. I will always love and miss you. XO.”

According to IMDB.com, Hogestyn twice won the Soap Opera Digest award as the most popular male star. He also won an award with co-star Deidre Hall as favorite couple.

Hogestyn is survived by his wife, Victoria Ann Post, and four children.
