Leighton Meester (Single parents, River Wild) has joined the cast of season two of the Apple TV+ historical drama series The buccaneers.

Created and written by Katherine Jakeways, based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel, it stars Christina Hendricks, Mia Threapleton, Kristine Frøseth, Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Aubri Ibrag and Imogen Waterhouse.

According to the official synopsis, “in the first season of The buccaneersa group of fun-loving young American girls exploded into tightly corseted London in the 1870s… setting pulses racing and sparking an Anglo-American culture clash. Now the Buccaneers are no longer the invaders; England is their homeland. In fact, they practically run the place. Nan (Frøseth) is the Duchess of Tintagel, the most influential woman in the land. Conchita (Boe) is Lady Brightlingsea, heroine of a wave of young American heirs. And Jinnyn (Waterhouse) is on every front page, wanted for the kidnapping of her unborn child. Forced into adulthood, all girls must now fight to be heard as they struggle with romance, lust, jealousy, births and deaths… themes that concern all women of all ages, regardless of the year. Last time we had a taste of England. This time we are in for a real party.”

Totah plays Mabel Elmsworth, Ibrag plays Lizzy Elmsworth, Hendricks is Mrs. St. George and Threapleton plays Honoria Marable.

The ensemble cast also includes Guy Remmers as Theo, Duke of Tintagel, Matthew Broome as Guy Thwarte, Josh Dylan as Lord Richard Marable and Barney Fishwick as Lord James Seadown.

Master’s character is not yet revealed.

The show is compared to Netflix hit in size and tone Bridgerton, Although director Susanna White spoke to Deadline late last year, she tried to downplay the comparisons. “It’s nice to be compared to Bridgerton because it’s so phenomenally popular, but it was never the ambition to make something like that,” she said.

Season two of The buccaneers is directed by William McGregor, Rachel Leiterman, John Hardwick and Charlie Manton. Jakeways, Beth Willis and Susanna White serve as executive producers. The buccaneers is produced for Apple TV+ by The Forge Entertainment, a Banijay UK company.

Meester is represented by UTA.
